Our Journey Since 1861
The story of John Smeal Exports is deeply intertwined with the rich history of Assam and the visionary leadership of the Mukherjee family. Founded in 1861 by Mr. Kshetra Mohan Mukherjee, John Smeal was one of the first registered companies in Assam. What began as a modest FMCG business quickly expanded into a ship repairing factory, serving the East India Company. This early connection with the East India Company laid the foundation for our enduring legacy in trade and industry.
As hunting became a favored pastime among the elite, the business diversified into the distribution of air guns, catering to this growing demand. As the years passed, the next generation of the Mukherjee family began to take their place in the business, bringing with them fresh perspectives and a drive for expansion.
Mr. Sadhan Kumar Mukherjee, the torchbearer of the second generation, took the reins of the business and set his sights on new horizons. Under his leadership, the company ventured into the liquor distribution industry, further solidifying its presence in the market. His strategic vision and dedication propelled the business to new heights, paving the way for future growth.
The baton was then passed to the third generation, with Mr. Buddhadeb Mukherjee at the helm. His leadership saw the business grow tenfold, as he expanded into hardware, electronics, and precious metals such as gold and silver. His entrepreneurial spirit and keen business acumen ensured that the company continued to thrive and diversify.
Today, the fourth generation of the Mukherjee family manages the John Smeal legacy, steering the company into the global market. With a return to our roots, we have ventured into the export business, reconnecting with our historical ties to the East India Company. This latest chapter in our journey is a testament to our enduring commitment to growth, innovation, and the preservation of a legacy that has spanned over a century and a half.
